It has been around 8 months since i started to learn CG with main focus on 3D. I have started with Vue then later Cinema4D and, in meanwhile, doing some digital painting and basically Photoshop and so far it is going very good. But...since i have started to learn Cinema4D around 2-3 months ago i'm constantly having traces of doubts whether I'm going in the right direction with all this.
The source of those doubts is in software selection and learning path as well as my future. Why i'm having doubts about software? Well, knowledge of working in Vue and Cinema4D might be good and handy from time to time but with just those two guys i will probably never get the job in movie or game industry and maybe somewhere in architectural viz...
Recently i've been spending time reading a lot of articles around internet/magazines and even exchanging few emails with some of great artists such as Andree Wallin (
[link] ) and Francesco Corvino (
[link] ) to figure out what step should i take next now that i have learned few things.
For as long as i can remember it was always about digital matte painting! Later when i learned a bit about CG world beside matte painting there is also concept/environment design, compositing...etc; but what i did so far is that majority of time i spent on learning 3D and not so much 2D (digital painting, matte painting...) or at least not as much as i intended to. Although nowadays apparently more and more of 3D is involved in matte painting workflow, digital painting (fundamentals) are still very very important and that will not change for a long time i think.
That is why i came to a conclusion that i have to change my focus by spending majority of time on 2D instead of 3D. And since i am aiming on movie industry and to get the job in some major studio or/and freelancing i have to use what industry standard is. So instead of Cinema4D i have started to learn Maya which will be as main 3D software from now on. It is really hard to leave Cinema4D but as i was learning my way around it i always felt at the end of the day like i'm am, as i already said, going in wrong direction here.
Beside software and future career i am also thinking about attending some courses, online maybe but most definitely in-class. I was considering maybe Gnomon School since there i have seen some pretty cool 10 week courses so it would be nice to go there, get some experience, feel the life there and make some connections. So far it Gnomon but will see what other options are available around the world.
So..a lot of new things from now on and a lot of work to catch up. Even if i am changing focus now it does not mean that i'm am starting
from zero here so..i learned a lot but a lot is still there to learn!
P.S ...if anyone is who is reading this have any experience with Gnomon School or some other similar school i would love to here your opinions.
Write it down in comments, i would appreciate it lot!
Thanks! ..and if you read all this...i love you!
